Cleaner Air
The Crescent Corridor will reduce emissions every year by:
- 1,875,000 tons of carbon dioxide
- 3,350 tons of nitrogen oxides
- 80 tons of particulate matter
- Saving the American economy $147.5 million yearly
Cleaner air
On the Crescent Corridor, Norfolk Southern will do what we do best: move freight over the long-haul. And our trucking partners will do what they do best: move freight the shorter door-to-door distances.
That’s going to help everyone breathe easier. Since railroads are nearly four times more fuel efficient than trucks, the Crescent Corridor will reduce greenhouse gas emissions substantially.
Combine that with the railroad’s industry-leading sustainability program, and those black Norfolk Southern locomotives start to look very green.
Additionally, communities and other governments can help improve local air quality through partnerships with Norfolk Southern to equip switcher locomotives with “generator-set” engines.
This technology could reduce emissions of nitrous oxides and particulates by up to 80 and 90 percent, respectively, and reduce fuel consumption by up to 40 percent.
Norfolk Southern is proceeding apace with its gen-set program, but the public-private approach helps get these green machines deployed in local rail yards a lot faster.
