Norfolk Southern and the Port of Virginia’s path to prosperity runs along Heartland Corridor
Daily Press, Newport News, Virginia
NORFOLK — Sometime after sunset on Wednesday, Norfolk Southern Train 233 will chug out of Hampton Roads, loaded with about 200 corrugated steel cargo containers stacked two high.
Packed with electronics, clothing, toys and other consumer goods manufactured overseas, the containers are destined for the bustling consumer markets in Chicago and Ohio.
The 233 is the inaugural train to traverse Norfolk Southern's new "Heartland Corridor," a $320 million, three-year project funded in part with taxpayer money that aims to provide a direct link between the Port of Hampton Roads and the Midwest.
